I had a young person who was about to start his video production career ask me once, "Which is more important, editing or shooting?" As I thought about the question, even though they are both very important to the video production process, I have to say that I believe acquisition or "shooting" is more important than editing.
And here is my reason. If you shoot great footage to begin with, it gives you far more flexibility and freedom in the editing process to make something great. Anyone, who has good footage,m good music and a bit of time to edit, can make something decent. And there are some editors that can take terrible footage and create something compelling. However, the better the footage, the more flexibility and freedom and "room" you have in the edit bay to make it great.
If your footage is botched badly in the shoot, it makes it far harder, if possible at all, to make something great in the edit process.
So, in my opinion, shoot it right and have the freedom in post to make it amazing!
